Best eSIM for Japan (2026): Which One to Buy and Why
A no-nonsense comparison of Japan eSIMs — Klook, Ubigi, Airalo — from people who live in Osaka and test them on real trips.

Short answer: buy an eSIM before you fly, install it at home on Wi-Fi, and turn it on when the plane lands. You will have data before you reach passport control. Pocket Wi-Fi rentals and airport SIM counters are now the slow, expensive option.
Below is how the three eSIMs we actually use compare, who each one suits, and the three checks you must do before paying for any of them.
Before you buy: 3 things to check
- Your phone must be carrier-unlocked. A phone still locked to your home carrier cannot use a foreign eSIM. Check in Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock (iPhone) or ask your carrier.
- Your phone must support eSIM. iPhone XS/XR (2018) and newer do. On Android it varies: Google Pixel 3 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, and most recent flagships do — but many budget and some carrier-specific models don’t. Search your exact model + “eSIM”.
- Pick data-only. Almost all travel eSIMs are data-only: no Japanese phone number. That’s fine. You’ll use LINE, WhatsApp, Google Maps, and hotel Wi-Fi for calls. If you truly need a Japanese number (rare for tourists), that’s a different product.
The comparison

Prices change often and depend on GB and days, so we don’t print them here — the links below always show the current price.
Our recommendation by traveler type
“I just want it to work” → Airalo
The app walks you through installation step by step, and the support chat is responsive. 10 GB for a 7–10 day trip is plenty if you’re not streaming video constantly.

“I’m here 2+ weeks or I work remotely” → Ubigi
Ubigi’s unlimited and larger-GB plans are consistently solid, and the 60-day cookie means you can decide later. If you’re bouncing between Japan, Korea and Taiwan, its regional plan saves buying three eSIMs.

“I’m already booking stuff on Klook” → Klook eSIM
If you’re booking the Haruka train from Kansai Airport, USJ tickets, or a teamLab slot on Klook, it’s convenient to keep the eSIM in the same account. Klook also runs frequent promo codes on first orders.

eSIM vs pocket Wi-Fi vs physical SIM — quick verdict
- eSIM: cheapest, no pickup, no return, works the moment you land. Needs an unlocked eSIM phone. Winner for 90% of visitors.
- Pocket Wi-Fi: only worth it if you’re a family of 4+ with older phones, or you need to connect laptops all day. You must pick it up and return it, and keep it charged.
- Physical SIM: fine if your phone can’t do eSIM. Buy at the airport or a Bic Camera / Yodobashi. Slower than eSIM at arrival.

How much data do you need?
| Trip style | 7 days | 14 days |
|---|---|---|
| Maps, messaging, some photos uploads | 3–5 GB | 6–10 GB |
| Plus social video (Instagram, TikTok) | 8–10 GB | 15–20 GB |
| Streaming, video calls, hotspot for a laptop | Unlimited | Unlimited |
Google Maps is the big one in Japan — you’ll use it constantly for train routing. Download the Osaka/Tokyo areas offline anyway as a backup.
