Android is where most eSIM trouble happens — not because it’s harder, but because support varies by model and region. Spend two minutes on the compatibility check first and the rest is easy.
Step 0 — Does your phone actually support eSIM?
Generally yes on:
- Google Pixel 3 and newer (Pixel 3 has regional exceptions)
- Samsung Galaxy S20 / Note 20 / Z Flip / Z Fold and newer — but some carrier-branded US models and most models sold in Korea/China/Hong Kong do not
- Recent flagships from Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, OPPO, Sony — check your exact model
The quick test: open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs (Pixel) or Settings → Connections → SIM manager (Samsung). If you see “Add eSIM” or “Add mobile plan”, you’re good.
Also confirm the phone is carrier-unlocked. Many phones bought on a contract are locked until paid off.
If you fail either check, buy a physical SIM or pocket Wi-Fi instead.
Step 1 — Install at home on Wi-Fi
Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add eSIM → Scan QR code (or Need help? → Enter it manually). If you bought in an app, use its Install button.
Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM → Scan QR code from service provider.
Other brands: Settings → search “eSIM” or “SIM”. The flow is nearly identical.
When it finishes, name it “Japan” and keep your home SIM as the default for everything for now.
Step 2 — Don’t activate early
Some plans start counting days from the first network connection. To be safe: open the Japan SIM’s settings and turn it off until you land.
Step 3 — On landing
- Enable the Japan eSIM
- Set Mobile data → Japan
- On the Japan eSIM: Roaming → ON
- On your home SIM: Roaming → OFF
Pixel path: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Japan → Mobile data + Roaming. Samsung path: Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Japan, then Mobile networks → Data roaming.
Give it a minute. You should see docomo, au/KDDI, or SoftBank.
Step 4 — APN (only if data still doesn’t work)
A few providers require an APN. Check the email/app for one. If given: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Japan → Access Point Names → add it exactly as written, save, select it. Then toggle airplane mode on/off.
Android-specific gotchas
- Galaxy “Add eSIM” missing → your model/region doesn’t support eSIM. Not fixable with software.
- “Couldn’t download” at install → weak Wi-Fi, or the QR was already used. Try another network, or contact the provider to re-issue.
- Samsung dual data switching → Samsung sometimes flips data back to the home SIM after a reboot. Re-check after restarting.
- Mobile Suica/Pasmo → separate issue: transit cards on Android need a FeliCa chip, which most overseas Androids lack. Get a physical IC card at the airport. More in Getting around.
