How to Set Up a Japan eSIM on iPhone (Step by Step)
Install your Japan eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, then flip it on when you land. The exact iPhone settings, in order, plus the two toggles everyone forgets.

Do this at home, on Wi-Fi, the day before you fly. Installing takes five minutes; most problems come from people trying to do it at the airport without a connection.
What you need
- iPhone XS / XR or newer, carrier-unlocked (Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock: No SIM restrictions)
- iOS up to date
- A purchased Japan eSIM — see which one to buy
- Wi-Fi
Step 1 — Install the eSIM (at home)
If your provider sent a QR code:
- Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Service) → Add eSIM
- Tap Use QR Code and scan it from another screen (or use Enter Details Manually with the SM-DP+ address and activation code)
- Tap Continue when it asks to activate
If you bought through an app (Airalo, Ubigi, Klook): the app offers Install directly. Tap it and approve the prompt — no QR needed.
Step 2 — Label it, but don’t turn it on yet
iOS will ask about your new line. Set:
- Label: rename to “Japan”
- Default line: keep your home SIM
- Cellular data: keep your home SIM for now
Then, important: open Settings → Cellular → tap the Japan line → turn the line OFF until you land. This prevents the plan’s clock from starting early on plans that activate on first connection.
Step 3 — On landing: 4 taps
As soon as the plane is at the gate:
- Settings → Cellular → Japan → toggle the line ON
- Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → choose Japan
- Still on the Japan line → Data Roaming → ON (yes, on — travel eSIMs are technically “roaming” on their partner network)
- Settings → Cellular → your home SIM → Data Roaming → OFF (avoid accidental home-carrier charges)
Wait 30–60 seconds. You should see a Japanese carrier name (docomo, au/KDDI, SoftBank) in the status bar.
Step 4 — Keep your home number reachable (optional)
Your home SIM can stay on for calls and SMS (useful for bank 2FA codes) with its data roaming off. You won’t be charged for data; incoming SMS is usually free, but check with your carrier about receiving calls.
Common iPhone gotchas
- “Cellular plan cannot be added” — the phone is carrier-locked, or the QR was already used on another device. eSIMs are generally one-install only.
- No service after landing — Data Roaming on the Japan line is probably OFF. See eSIM not working in Japan.
- iMessage/FaceTime stop working — go to Settings → Messages → Send & Receive and make sure your Apple ID / home number is still selected.
- Dual-SIM iPhone from China/HK/Macau — these use two physical SIMs and may not support eSIM at all.
