USJ Tickets and Express Pass from Abroad (2026): What to Buy, Where, and Whether You Need the Express Pass at All

Universal Studios Japan tickets cost ¥8,400 to ¥11,900 depending on the date, the official site is awkward with foreign cards, and Express Passes sell out weeks ahead. Here is the simple version: which ticket, which Express Pass, where to buy, and how to get into Super Nintendo World.

Short version: Buy a 1-Day Studio Pass (¥8,400–¥11,900 by date) at least a few weeks ahead. If you are going on a weekend, a holiday, or any day in spring break or October, add an Express Pass 4 or 7 (¥15,000–¥25,000+) or you will spend most of the day in 90-minute queues. Quiet weekdays in late January, June or September can be done without one. The official site works but is clunky with foreign cards; Klook is an official partner and simpler. Super Nintendo World entry is free but needs a timed-entry ticket from the app once you are inside, or comes bundled with the right Express Pass.

The tickets

Studio Pass (admission)

Ticket Adult (12+) Child (4–11) Senior (65+)
1-Day Studio Pass ¥8,400 – ¥11,900 ¥5,400 – ¥7,400 ~¥8,000
1.5-Day Studio Pass (from 3pm day 1 + full day 2) roughly 1.3× the 1-day
2-Day Studio Pass roughly 1.8× the 1-day

Prices are date-based. Each date has a tier, and since September 2026 a date can also rise in price after sales open if demand is high, so earlier is cheaper. Rough pattern:

  • Cheapest (¥8,400–¥8,900): mid-January to early February weekdays, June weekdays, early-to-mid September weekdays, late November weekdays.
  • Mid (¥9,400–¥9,900): most ordinary weekdays.
  • Expensive (¥10,900–¥11,900): weekends, Japanese public holidays, Golden Week (late April–early May), Obon (mid-August), spring break (late March), all of October (Halloween), New Year.

Children under 4 are free. Tickets are tied to a date; the Studio Pass can usually be changed to another date once (fee may apply), the Express Pass cannot.

Express Pass (skip the lines)

An Express Pass is not admission. You need a Studio Pass as well. It gives you one ride each on a fixed list of attractions via the Express lane, plus (on most versions) guaranteed timed entry to Super Nintendo World.

Pass Rides included Typical price Who it suits
Express Pass 4 4 rides, several lineups (e.g. Mine-Cart Madness + Jurassic Park + Minion + choice; or Mine-Cart + Harry Potter + Minion + choice) ¥15,000 – ¥20,000 Half day, or you only care about 3–4 headline rides
Express Pass 7 7 rides incl. Mario Kart, Mine-Cart Madness, Yoshi, Harry Potter Forbidden Journey, Hippogriff + 2 choices ¥22,000 – ¥32,000 Most people on a busy day
Premium / Express 8+ Nearly everything ¥35,000+ Peak days, money no object

Prices vary by date like the Studio Pass, and the same number can mean different ride lists. Read the lineup. If Mario Kart matters to you, make sure it is on your pass; the cheaper Express 4 variants often skip it.

Express Passes are capped per day and sell out, often 3–6 weeks ahead for weekends and holidays, sometimes 2 months for Halloween and Golden Week. If the date you want shows no Express Pass, that is why.

Do you actually need an Express Pass?

Honest guide:

Your day Express Pass?
Weekend, holiday, Golden Week, Obon, October, spring break Yes. Queues hit 120–180 min for Nintendo World rides and Harry Potter. Without it you will ride 3–4 things all day.
Ordinary weekday in a mid-tier month, arriving at opening Optional. Express 4 is a reasonable upgrade; you can manage without if you go straight to Nintendo World and ride the big ones first.
Cheapest-tier weekday (Jan/Feb, June, Sept), arriving at opening Usually no. Queues of 30–60 minutes are typical. Save the money.
Travelling with small children who will not ride the big coasters Probably no. The Express Pass is built around the thrill rides.

A simple rule: if your date’s Studio Pass is in the expensive tier, buy an Express Pass. If it is in the cheapest tier, you probably do not need one.

Where to buy

Official USJ Web Ticket Store

  • Cheapest in principle; same price as everywhere else since partners cannot discount.
  • Full English site, but the checkout is known to reject some foreign credit cards (3D Secure issues) and the account creation step is fiddly. Many people succeed, many give up.
  • Tickets arrive as QR codes; show the full screen at the gate.
  • Can also buy at Lawson convenience stores in Japan up to the day before, but Express Passes for popular dates will be gone by then.

Klook (official partner)

  • Same prices as official, English checkout, accepts foreign cards without drama, QR code delivered instantly, customer support if something goes wrong.
  • Sells Studio Passes, Express Passes (all tiers) and combos.
  • This is the route we recommend to most overseas visitors. Not because it is cheaper (it is not), because it works first time.

KKday / Trip.com / GetYourGuide

  • Also authorized for USJ in most cases; same prices. Fine if you already use one of them.

Avoid

  • Resale sites, auction listings, and anyone offering a “discount” USJ ticket. Tickets are name- and date-locked; resold ones get refused at the gate.
  • Anyone selling Express Passes for a date the official site shows as sold out. That is a scam.

Super Nintendo World: how to get in

Entry to the Nintendo area is free but controlled. Three ways in:

  1. Express Pass with “Area Timed Entry” included. Most Express 4 and 7 variants include it. You get a fixed time slot. Easiest.
  2. Free Area Timed Entry Ticket from the USJ app. Once you are physically inside the park, open the official USJ app, scan your Studio Pass, and request a slot. On busy days these are gone within 30–60 minutes of park opening. Arrive before the gates open.
  3. Walk in during unrestricted times. On quiet days the area opens up with no ticket needed, usually from mid-afternoon. Signs at the entrance say so.

Inside, Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge and Mine-Cart Madness (the Donkey Kong coaster, opened December 2024) are the long queues. Yoshi’s Adventure is a slow ride for kids. The Power-Up Band (¥4,800) is optional: it lets you hit the blocks and play the mini-games; fun with kids, skippable without.

Early Park Entry

Guests at USJ Official Hotels (The Park Front Hotel, Hotel Universal Port, Hotel Kintetsu Universal City, and others next to the park) can enter 15 minutes before the general public. That quarter-hour is enough to be first in line for Nintendo World timed entry or first on Mine-Cart Madness. If you are doing USJ on a busy day without an Express Pass, this is the single biggest edge available, and the hotels are a 2-minute walk from the gate. Rooms run ¥20,000–¥40,000 and come with the Osaka accommodation tax (¥200–¥500 per person).

Getting there

  • Universal City Station on the JR Yumesaki (Sakurajima) Line. From Osaka Station, 12 minutes direct (¥190). From Namba, take the Metro to Nishikujo and change (about 20 minutes total). From Kyoto, about 55 minutes with one change at Osaka.
  • Not covered by the Osaka Amazing Pass (it is JR). Use an IC card.
  • Gates typically open 30–60 minutes before the posted opening time on busy days. Aim to be at the gate 45 minutes before the posted time.

Sample day without an Express Pass (quiet weekday)

  • 8:00 at the gate (posted opening 9:00). Gates open 8:30.
  • 8:35 straight to the back of the park, request Nintendo World timed entry in the app, get a 9:30 slot.
  • 8:45 Harry Potter: Forbidden Journey, 20-minute queue.
  • 9:30 Nintendo World. Mine-Cart Madness, Mario Kart, Yoshi. Out by 11:30.
  • 11:45 lunch (Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade, or Kinopio Café in Nintendo World if you booked).
  • Afternoon: Jurassic Park, Hollywood Dream, Minions, Jaws, the shows. Queues 20–40 minutes.
  • 18:00 done, back in Namba by 18:40.

On a Saturday in October that same plan gets you three rides.

FAQ

Can I buy USJ tickets on the day at the gate? Yes, if not sold out. Most days are not. But Express Passes and Nintendo timed entry will be gone, so you will be in the long queues.

Is the official USJ site in English? Yes. The problem is not the language, it is the card processing. If your card fails twice, go to Klook rather than retrying.

Does the Express Pass include admission? No. You need both a Studio Pass and an Express Pass.

Can I change the date of my ticket? Studio Pass: usually once, within the validity period, possibly with a fee, via the official site. Express Pass: no. Check the terms of wherever you bought it.

How much does a day at USJ cost in total? Two adults, mid-tier weekday, Express 7, lunch, one souvenir: roughly ¥75,000–¥85,000. Without the Express Pass: ¥35,000–¥40,000.

Is the 2-Day pass worth it? If you want to do everything at a relaxed pace without an Express Pass, yes. Two quiet weekdays with no Express Pass costs less than one busy day with Express 7, and you see more.

Is there a Kyoto–USJ day trip? USJ is a full day. Doing it from Kyoto means 55 minutes each way; fine, but stay in Osaka if you can.
